    Nikon D60

I would also recommend a Nikon D300, but it is more like $1,500 without a lens.

    Canon S5 of Canon SX10
Portable AA’s are found everywhere in the word.
I have the S5 and I love it.
Check out the thread I started below.

For just under $450 you can buy a Nikon D40 with 18-55 mm lens, great for shooting landscapes, group shots and portraits.

Since you will be traveling over 30 days, buy at least a couple of 2 GB memory cards on sale (under $25 for both) and a card reader if your notebook does not have one. Then at the end of the day, you can copy all the images from your memory cards and save them on your computer … you will then be able to resize a few (saving them as a new file name) and email them home to your friends and family.

Just remember to take your battery charger with you and the plug adapters for each country ($10 of a kit of them).

You should get the new Canon SD990is or you can get Canon SD 880is

SD 990is costs $399 or less It has new DIGIC 4 processor. It gives you more warm, smooth color. It takes faster picture with 1.3 fps. with viewfinder to use for outdoor and safe you battery life.

SD880is replace the SD870is. SD880 come with 8 mega pixels with 4x optical zoom and 28mm wide angle zoom. it’s a great idea for landscape photo.

If you go to Europe, Canon cameras use 100-240v but you have to buy an adapter for the charger.

I hope this info might helps you to decide to buy a new camera.

    Have fun

If you have $500 to spend, you will be able to buy an entry DSLR with kit lens only. You won’t have enough to get a telephoto lens and an external flash.

I’d recommend to get the Canon SX10 IS. It is a 10 megapixel camera with 28-560mm 20x optical zoom. It also have image stabilization. It is very convenient for travel. It also use AA batteries, but I’d strongly recommend to use recharge NiMH AA batteries.
