Unless you’re a elite member of their Asia Miles program, or a frequent flyer on a One World member airline with a lot of miles flown on Cathay Pacific you can pretty much forget about an upgrade. I’ve flown over 750,00 miles on Cathay and never got an upgrade until I flew almost 200,000 miles on their airline, and every upgrade I got I never once asked for, they gave it to me at the gate. If you have a full-fare economy ticket and they’re overbooked in economy you might have a slight chance, but you can pretty much forget about an upgrade if this is your first flight with them or are an infrequent flyer on their airline. You can ask, but unless you pay for it or are an elite member of their program I sure wouldn’t get my hopes up.
