6 weeks sounds like a long time but you are trying to do a lot. So I suggest just a few places in each country or you are going to feel like you are running around and getting the feel of nothing.
For Japan, fly into Tokyo and stay 2-3 days then take the train to Kyoto(the best tourist spot). Try to find a ryokan(traditional Japananese style hotel). That’ll help make the trip feel even more exotic.
Thailand has a great variety for tourists. Visit Bangkok for a couple of days, Ayuthaya or Sukothai for the history(old city ruins) Chaing Mai in the north for the culture, and then find a beach to stop and relax for a while. There are many beaches with different atmospheres and activities.
Wish I could contribute suggestions for your other destinations but I haven’t been there ,yet.
    Good luck.

6 weeks is kinda short i must say. My recommendation would be that you stop over at Singapore, and take the few budget airlines into Thailand or other countries.

You can later take the airline from Vietnam into Beijing,China and you can prolly spend 1 week at Beijing before moving to Korea or Japan.

And of these places will have plenty of things to see. If you were to visit Beijing, its nothing much of a concrete jungle now. its only when you travel to the sub-urbs, you “MIGHT” get to see something that is not the everyday norm.

My Take would be this. Spend a week in each city and move upwards, but 1 week is not enough to immerse yourself into their rich culture and tradition. Do take some time and consider how much time you want to travel. It took me 1 month to explore New Dehli and about 6 weeks exploring New Zealand. as for china and thailand, i went there last year for about 4-5 days each. it doesnt seems to be sufficient because theres too much to see.

I would say fly into Japan. From there you can take a ferry to South Korea. From South Korea, you can take a ferry to China. From Beijing, you can take a train to Hanoi. I’ve read somewhere you can cross overland from Vietnam to Thailand through the Lao Bao border gate but I’m not too sure of this. Most people do the Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand route actually.

6weeks is really tight if you are going to travel overland. If you can afford it, do fly as it will save you lots of time. However, even if you fly, your schedule is going to be exhausting as you’re packing a lot in a short time. I recently did Ho Chi Minh, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Bangkok in 2 weeks and by the time I got to Bangkok, I was so tired I stayed in the hotel most of the time resting. Well, it’s just my opinion. Good Luck.

When you go to korea the people will be really nice to you. If your having trouble just ask someone on the street for help and a lot of people speak english there so your pefectly fine. I’m not really sure about the other countries though. Oh well, have fun though. :)

That’s a lot of ground to cover. Too much ground IMHO. Unless you are really flush with cash I’d HIGHLY recommend you check out Lonely Planet’s web site….

    http://www.lonelyplanet.com/

Japan and South Korea has fantastic transportation by rail, but it’s expensive.

China has great rail transportation and it’s cheap, but it’s unreliable, overcrowded and not always safe.

Thailand and Vietnam are much more primitive, mostly bus transportation is what’s available.

Are you physically fit? If so, I’d recommend you trying something really neat like touring Japan by bicycle. Many tours do this spending their nights at Shinto and Buddhists shrines and temples (cheap). I did a two week bike tour back in 1986 when I lived there. Just an idea.

In any case, check out Lonely Planet (they’ve got great books too) and give serious thought to doing more in fewer places.

PS. Count on plenty of rain.

Hi, I must say you are very brave to venture into so many countries where you are likely to face language problemS Just wondering how you are planning your itinerary and how you are going to do the connections in between the countries. Some of them like japan and South Korea will require you to into them, whereas there can be overland options once you hit the mainland.

For a start, you may want to plan your trip to start in Japan or South Korea as this will reduce your flight time a bit from Canada. From there, you can fly into the other, then cross over to China and then Vietnam and lastly Thailand to recuperate after the long travel to relax before heading back.

Also in this fashion, you will flow from the east to the west direction without criss-crossing your journey.

What you can do in the meantime is to look up the various tourism board in each country and try to link up with a travel company for the travel segment in that country. At least you know your travel needs are taken care of, at least where travel document like visa is concerned.

    Japan : http://www.japantravelinfo.com/top/index.php

    S. Korea : http://www.tour2korea.com/

    China : http://www.cnto.org/

    Vietnam : http://www.vietnamtourism.com/

    Thailand : http://www.tourismthailand.org

At least the travel company will by sanctioned by the national body giving you some reliability as to their service.

Hope you have a good trip. You can email me for details on Thailand if you like, my specialty. Or any other travel tip.
