Research, Research and Research. I lived in Africa (East and South Africa) for over 4 years. Beautiful and wonderful experience. Many of the volunteer opps out there you have to pay for – essentially you cant just go to a country/village and just start working. There are formalities, etc. If you have the money to do so and the time – especially the time – You didnt specify how long you trip is going to be – you should give yourself at least a month to do any meaningful and fulfilling work, something that can be started and finished because why leave anyone hanging right?? Safari is a whole different deal – you have to check out deals, decide what you want to see and where – there is so much to see – Your trip is easy going to be a couple of thousand dollars.
If you start contachting companies early you can work out great deals, esp now but dont go into it blindly. You will have a terrific experience, I know i did

oh sure pal.buy a motor bike, start at the top and work ur way down.
i did it in 1986 and its cool.
    safari!!!!!!!!!!!!!! eek whats that?
buy a lonely planet and read up or something.google.

sh-t, now you want the good samaritan experiance too. boy you must have loads of money and time.look bro,get your self to africa and just enter any old village and teach some kids to count to 100.show mama and papa how to rotate a crop and then leave a few bucks in seed for the next season.job well done.take a photo and then come back in a few years and see if your efforts were good.a slight taste of africa like this is more fulfilling than ending up in some buerocratic run place.
